“I have been trying to tell this story for more than 30 years. It was always impossible: too big, too expensive, just always ‘too.’ Finally, I have found a home and creative partners with the talent and vision and a technology that will allow moviegoers to witness in some form events that took place more than 500 years ago. The facts of that time (the arrival of the Spaniards, the battles, the eventual fall of the astonishing city of Tenochtitlan) are rich and complicated, and many are disputed. Our goal is to tell one story – not the story, because there are many sides to it. We want to entertain, to give viewers a glimpse of the clash between two very different, almost alien cultures. We are, and we must be, bold in this.”
Utopai Studios is especially enthusiastic about one of its first announced projects: “Cortés.” Set in 1519, the historical epic follows Hernán Cortés during the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire.
Cortés is a Marco Weber production for Utopai Studios and is written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicholas Kazan and directed by Paul Mignot. It is a Paris-based production with shooting planned for September in Spain. Cortés is scheduled for release in 2027. The project represents a decades-long effort to bring an unusually large and expensive historical story to life.
Utopai Studios will use AI-enabled production tools to help overcome the scale and cost limitations that previously kept the project from the screen, while keeping the filmmakers in control of the creative process. International sales are being handled by K5 International.
